4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility
Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers:
a. advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources
b. address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies and providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources
c. promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information
d. develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital-age communication and collaboration tools
Reflection:
There were many times throughout the semester in which the ethical, legal use of technology was discussed. While working on the PhotoStory I used the knowledge we gained from class to make sure I was ethically incorporating pictures and music into my PhotoStory. It was also important to discuss copyright laws when we created our websites and our YouTube videos. It is extremely important to not claim others work as your own.
An assignment that I found especially interesting was our TurnItIn assignment. By having us post both a plagiarized paper allowed us to get an educator’s perspective on plagiarism. I believe this is a great tool in order to allow students to self-monitor.
I believe that PhotoStory, YouTube, my website all are good examples of using technology ethically. TurnItIn.com should be implemented in all the classrooms. Teachers should use this website any time that they feel as though a student has plagiarized and the students should use the website to self monitor. I think it would benefit students if they were able to do an assignment similar to ours so they can get a feeling about what plagiarism is about.
Artifacts/Evidence:
• YouTube video
• PhotoStory
• TurnItIn
• Website
Future Learning Goals:
My main concern here is actually remembering and implementing all the copyright and fair use laws throughout my teaching experience. The best way for an educator to stay updated with copyright and fair use laws is to be aware of them. If there is a change teachers need to be the first to know, that is why it is so important that teacher constantly learn new and improving information.

I did not realize until we learned about it in this class that it is important to credit even pictures and music. I agree with you, it is very important to be ethical when using information, pictures and music off of the internet.
ReplyDeletegiving credit to the rightful owners of a picture is very important. I had no idea that there were copyrighted laws before this class.
ReplyDeleteI found this interesting and useful as well. I had no idea you couldn't take any picture or sound until I had this class. I also liked learning about turnitin. That will be useful as a teacher as well.
